Tattooing Aftercare

The artist tarot card from Hoodoo

Aftercare Procedure

The Healing Process

Keep Your Hands Clean

Hand washing is the most important method of reducing any chance of infection, so wash them often, especially before touching your fresh tattoo.

Wash Your Tattoo

There will be a syrupy, sticky layer during your first wash, comprised of ink, blood, plasma & lymph fluid, get rid of as much of it as you can. Using your clean fingers, gently wash the area with warm water until you can feel the syrupy layer has gone. If any of this layer remains, your scabs will be much thicker. After your first clean, wash your tattoo every few hours.

Aftercare Balm

Aftercare balm will be provided for you, but if you would prefer to use your own, be sure to avoid fragranced or alcohol-based products. Don’t apply too much balm as your skin needs to breathe, so using too much could clog your pores leading to spots. Make sure you take it with you everywhere.

A Clean Environment

For the first 48 hours your tattoo is still an open wound. You will be protected before you leave the studio. At home, wrap in film & change it often if it’s touching clothing. Don’t towel dry, use a clean paper towel instead. Ensure your bed linen is fresh & clean before sleeping.

Be Careful With Your Scabs

Don’t rub or scratch, only pat. Scabbing is part of the healing process & you want to make sure they stay on for as long as possible. Premature removal of your scabs will pull out some ink. Don’t drink alcohol, as it thins your blood & prevents scabs from forming properly. Avoid vigorous exercise. No soaking, bathing or swimming for a month. No saunas, steam rooms or sunbeds. Avoid wearing tight clothing. Don’t expose your tattoo to the sun. If you spray tan, you should stop. And stay hydrated!

All of this information will be explained to you after your tattoo.
